Cynthia M ★ 1 · Jul 2025Beautiful Area right next to the resort and lake
Corissa W ★ 1 · Jun 2023I reserved a group site and still had to pay $10 for parking on top of the $108 for the site. There was broken glass by the tables on the right side. None of the grills were usable due to damage ( if not damaged, they were full of trash and debris). The area had signs posted that it was reserved, but people continued to park, and walk through our event. There is no easy access to the lake. The staff at the gate coming in were not very knowledgeable, upon entering we told them we had reserved the site, they told us where to go, and we had to return and ask them to unlock it, which then took another twenty minutes. I would have been okay with everything, except the broken glass, trash, and damaged grills because we had smaller children that we could not let run around. Upsetting for the cost.

Rainbow Bay sits on the shore of Lake of the Woods about 33 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, reached by following Highway 140 and turning onto Forest Road 3701 for a short drive into the Fremont-Winema landscape. The site is a single group picnic/campsite (1 total campsite) that can accommodate both RVs and tents, making it a compact but versatile stop for families or small groups who want direct waterfront access without a large developed campground. The picnic area is equipped with several tables, extended barbecue grills, drinking water and flush toilets, and a nearby boat ramp and broad sandy beach make launching kayaks, canoes or small boats convenient. A resort close by provides basic amenities, lodging and dining if you need services beyond what the site offers. Because the site's access is on a forest road, check current road conditions and any seasonal restrictions with the Fremont-Winema National Forest before you travel. The setting opens onto mixed recreational country: trails thread into towering conifers and the Sky Lakes Wilderness lies within easy reach, an area of ridges and more than 200 ponds and lakes that ranges from about 3,800 to 9,495 feet in elevation. On the water you can fish for rainbow and brown trout, Kokanee salmon, bass and perch from shore or boat, and in summer the beach invites swimming, picnicking and paddling at sunset. Winter brings opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the surrounding forest. Wildlife is abundant across the varied habitats expect to see mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk and pronghorn, seasonal flocks of geese, ducks and swans, and the area does support species such as black bear and mountain lion, so store food securely. For longer outings, Crater Lake National Park and the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway are both within a day's drive and offer contrasting landscapes and additional trail and fishing options. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are not specified here, so contact the Fremont-Winema National Forest office for up-to-date information before your trip.
