“The roads need a lot of work but it is a the road needs a lot of work due to all the extra rain this year”
“There were fresh bear tracks when I arrived, and saw plenty of frogs and birds including a great blue Herron. It was easy to reserve my spot, and overall experience was excellent. I found a new favorite campsite on the dunes. ”

Siltcoos Sand Camping sits on the edge of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area about seven miles south of Florence, where broad swaths of wind-sculpted sand meet pockets of coastal shore pine. Campsites are literally on the sand amid a dunefield that in places rises to heights measured in the hundreds of feet; open riding areas and crisscrossing off-road vehicle routes dominate the landscape north of Siltcoos Beach Road. Off-highway vehicle riding is the primary draw here, but the campground also puts you close to non-motorized options the Stagecoach Hiking Trailhead gives access to the short, accessible Lagoon Trail and the longer Waxmyrtle Trail that threads shore pine and follows the Siltcoos River to the beach and to shoreline activities such as beachcombing, shorebird watching (including areas with seasonal closures for threatened snowy plover nesting), surf play, and seasonal whale watching. The broader Siuslaw National Forest around Siltcoos supports a range of outdoor pursuits from fishing and boating on nearby Siltcoos, Carter, and Sutton lakes to biking, horseback riding, and interpretive programs offered elsewhere in the forest. The camping here is primitive and rugged: there are 16 sand campsites in total 15 that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site and one of those sites is managed as a larger group site. Standard sites can hold up to 20 people and five vehicles, while the group site can accommodate up to 40 people and 10 vehicles; within each site all vehicles and tents must remain within 150 feet of the marker post. Sites are accessible year-round but require a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle to reach the sand, and the area provides no water, restrooms, or permanent fire rings, so you must bring your own water, portable toilet, and a fire pan for any fires. Reservations are required for all sites at all times of year; sites unoccupied 24 hours after the scheduled arrival time will be released (call the ranger station at 541-271-6000 if you expect to arrive late). For trail access and additional riding options, the Siltcoos Beach staging area is a short drive further west on Siltcoos Beach Access Road, and nearby trails and lakes offer quieter alternatives when you want to step away from the dunes.
