South Jetty Sand Camping sits on the edge of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, less than two miles south of Florence, where campsites are scattered directly on wind-sculpted sand among dunefields that rise to roughly 500 feet above sea level. The setting is defined by wide, open beaches and a patchwork of designated off-road vehicle routes plus a larger open riding area to the south of South Jetty Road, so the biggest draw here is ORV riding; miles of hard-packed and soft sand let riders of various skill levels explore dune faces and shoreline. Hikers launching from the nearby South Jetty Day-Use Area can walk for miles along the beach to watch shorebirds, poke through dune formations, and during certain seasons scan the ocean for migrating whales; a separate non-motorized section of beach keeps pedestrian traffic apart from the riding areas. Beyond the dunes, Florence offers restaurants, shops and services a short drive north, and additional outdoor options including Siltcoos Recreation Area and several lakes for boating and fishing are within a few miles. The campground is very much primitive and self-reliant: there are 14 total campsites (13 that accommodate both RVs and tents, plus one tent-only site) and all sites are reachable only by 4x4 vehicles. No potable water is available on site, so bring enough for drinking and cleaning, and all campers must provide their own portable toilets and fire pans. Standard sites are sized to hold up to five vehicles and as many as 20 people, while the group site accepts up to 10 vehicles and 40 people; within each site all vehicles and tents must be kept within 150 feet of the site marker post. Sites are available year-round but are reservation-only and can fill quickly in summer; if you expect to arrive more than 24 hours after your reservation time, call the ranger station at 541-271-6000 to avoid a no-show cancellation (sites unoccupied after 24 hours may be released).
