“Campground host is super friendly and helpful. Most of the trails are blocked from downed trees but OET and BCH have secured a grant to hire a crew to clear all the trails this fall. One trail to Maidu lake is open and a small loop by the Campground also. ”

Kelsay Valley Horse Camp sits where the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River threads through high Cascade meadows, a place where late spring often arrives with a sudden flush of wildflowers purples, reds, yellows and whites carpeting the open slopes. The campground doubles as a trailhead and is commonly used as a base for horseback outings: the Porcupine Connect Trail (1412A) leaves from here and links to the North Umpqua Trail (1414) and Windigo Pass Trail (1412), while the North Umpqua route continues southeast into the Mount Thielsen Wilderness and connects with trails such as Tolo Creek (1466), Lucile Lake (1459), the Maidu Lake Loop and even the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (2000). Lemolo Lake and its resort are a short drive away, and the broader Umpqua National Forest offers auto touring, biking, climbing and river recreation if you want to mix day hikes or a river stop with your overnight pack trip. The site is reached in the high Cascades about 74 miles east of Roseburg along OR-138, then up Windigo Pass Road to a short forest spur that ends at the camp and trailhead. The campground provides 14 sites in total: nine equestrian sites with corrals (most corrals are about 12 by 12 feet) and five sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; note that these sites do not offer electrical hookups. Each site has partial shade, a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets are on site, but there is no drinking water, so plan to bring all you need. Because the layout is intended for pack and saddle use as well as standard camping, the campground supplies manure bins plus wheelbarrows and shovels and asks that only groups with horses reserve equestrian sites campers without pack or riding horses who occupy equestrian sites may be turned away or directed elsewhere. Garbage service is limited, so you should be prepared to pack out refuse; additionally there is a $5 per-vehicle nightly fee that must be paid at the campground fee kiosk upon arrival.
