PATRICK S ★ 4 · Jun 2025Nice spot, but the mosquitos are terrible. Plenty of firewood and ample parking. Would be nice if they gave you an option to lock or block the entry while in use! Even though it says reserved and is a private entry, we had multiple unwanted vehicles driving down and turning around and dusting everyone out. One rig we had to chase out in the middle of the night because they didn't understand it was a reserved group camp and wanted to set up. Would have been a 5 star rating otherwise.

Windy Group Camp sits at the southwest edge of Crescent Lake in Deschutes National Forest and is built around a single large group site right at the water's edge. There is 1 campsite total, configured as both RV and tent sites, and it can hold up to 40 people, so it's best for family gatherings or clubs rather than individual backcountry camping. The setting is high-elevation lake country in a glaciated basin behind a moraine dam: the lake's clear blue-green water, sandy shoreline and a backdrop of lodgepole pine with mountain hemlock, fir and spruce give the area a rugged, alpine feel. Volcanic landforms cinder cones, lava flows and calderas are visible in the wider landscape. Facilities are intentionally basic: you'll find one wooden-style vault toilet, a few picnic tables and a barbecue pit; roads into the site are unpaved but wide enough to park RVs with room to spare. Because there is only one reservable site at Windy Group, plan ahead and check Recreation.gov for fees and availability; note that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. Recreation centers on Crescent Lake itself and the surrounding trail network. In spring through fall most groups focus on boating, swimming and fishing anglers commonly catch salmon and trout, with summer generally offering the best fishing and boats can be launched from nearby access points. In winter the nearby Crescent Lake Snowpark becomes a staging area for skiers and snowmobilers; the Summit Lake Trail, about 9 miles one-way along the old road, provides extended winter or summer travel with sweeping views of Crescent Lake and Diamond Peak. Beyond the campground, the Deschutes National Forest offers almost 1,600 miles of trails and a wide range of activities (auto touring, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and more), plus regional attractions such as the Lava Lands Visitor Center, Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. The campground is reached from Highway 58 near Crescent Lake Junction, then west on Forest Road 60 for several miles; because amenities at the site are minimal, bring drinking water, cooking supplies and any specialized gear you'll need, or plan to stop at the Crescent Lake resort/general store or facilities in Bend for last-minute rentals and provisions.
