“Quiet and clean campground. Absolutely love the Metolious River!”
“This site is really close to the bathroom which was quite smelly. Close to the water but no view. River trail goes right by the site. ”
“What an awesome campground! We had a site right next to the Metolius and a short walk from the bathrooms. The location is great, with the river trail making it very easy to walk the 1.3 miles to the Camp Sherman Store.”

Smiling River Campground sits beside the clear, spring-fed Metolius River in the central Oregon portion of Deschutes National Forest, a setting defined by cold, fast water that issues from Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte (a 3,076-foot cinder cone) and flows north through conifer forest and volcanic terrain. Many of the 34 campsites look toward the river, offering easy access to one of the region's premier fly-fishing runs rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon are all present and to riverside trails that range into higher subalpine forest. Hikers and backpackers will find short walks and longer routes nearby, and the Metolius-Windigo Trail, which begins near the river's headwaters and runs more than 100 miles, invites long-distance riders, hikers and mountain bikers; wildlife in the area includes mule deer, coyote, cougar, migratory birds and native fish that make the river corridor lively year-round. Practical amenities at Smiling River are straightforward and designed for low-impact enjoyment: all 34 sites accommodate both tents and RVs (there are no hookups), and the campground provides picnic areas, trails and scenic overlooks, along with firewood, drinking water and flush toilets. Sites are reservable through Recreation.gov; be aware that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. The campground is reached from Sisters by heading northwest on Highway 20 toward Camp Sherman and the Metolius River an easy drive that places you within reach of regional attractions such as the Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend for interpretive exhibits, and the broader recreational offerings of Deschutes National Forest, including biking, boating, horseback riding and winter sports depending on season.
