Candle Creek Campground sits where Candle Creek meets the Metolius River at the upper end of the Metolius Valley the spot where the river's calm spring-fed flow turns toward the rapids. That clear, cold water comes from Metolius Springs at the base of nearby Black Butte (a 3,076-foot cinder cone), and supports a healthy population of rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon, making the river a favored stretch for fly-fishing. Trails in the immediate area range from easy riverside walks to longer routes that climb into subalpine forest, so day hikes and extended backpacking are both good options; wildlife is common, too, with mule deer, coyote, occasional cougar and steady bird activity for watchers who bring binoculars. The campground's intimate scale and location at the end of the valley where locals often fish and launch day trips give it a quieter, more river-focused character than larger developed sites nearby. Practical details matter here: Candle Creek has 10 campsites, each configured to accommodate either RVs or tents, but there are no water or electrical hookups, so campers must bring their own drinking water and expect a more self-sufficient stay. Sites include a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and vault toilets are available; a gravel access road reaches the campground, so drive slowly and use caution RVs and passenger cars can be accommodated but the road isn't ideal for large rigs. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov and note that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the contact center nor the campground manager can modify it. If you want to expand your days of exploration, nearby attractions include the Camp Sherman fish-viewing platform, the Metolius and Wizard Falls hatchery display ponds, the Metolius Research Natural Area, and trailheads for the long Metolius Windigo route; Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument (including Lava River Cave) are a short drive farther out and make good day-trip options from the campground.
