“Huge campsites, great creek access, super quiet and very little cell service--all a plus!”

Jack Creek Campground sits on a small tributary of the Metolius River roughly 17.5 miles northwest of Sisters, Oregon, reached from Highway 20 via Forest Roads 12 and 1230. The campground occupies a forested stretch near the Metolius headwaters and the cinder cone Black Butte (3,076 feet), and it is one of a chain of small campgrounds that follow the river. There are 19 total campsites, and each site is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents; trailers and motorhomes are common here even though the campground does not provide water or electric hookups. Every site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill, vault toilets serve the loop, and because this is a no-water facility you must bring your own drinking and washing supply. The campground's compact size and practical amenities make it a straightforward base for anglers and day hikers rather than a full-service RV stop. Fishing and hiking dominate activity options at Jack Creek and along the Metolius: the spring-fed river's clear, cold flows are prime for fly-fishing for rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon, and the nearby Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform and regional hatcheries offer additional viewing and educational opportunities. Trails range from short riverside walks to more ambitious routes into subalpine forest; the Metolius-Windigo Trail more than 100 miles long and open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders begins near the river headwaters. Nearby attractions include the Metolius Research Natural Area for birdwatching and the geological exhibits at Bend's Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument (including the 5,211-foot Lava River Cave). Practical notes: check Recreation.gov for current availability and seasonal notices, be prepared to pack in water and supplies, observe any local fire restrictions, and remember that once your reservation start date has begun, "neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation."
