Pioneer Ford Campground sits along the clear, cold waters of the Metolius River in the Deschutes National Forest, roughly 22 miles northwest of Sisters via Highway 20 and Forest Road 14. The site cluster shaded by a mix of pine and cedar leans toward privacy, with many campsites tucked under canopy and several positioned right at the riverbank. There are 19 campsites in total: 17 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 designated tent-only sites. The campground is a practical choice for trailers and motorhomes, offering a mix of back-in and pull-through sites; every campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring, and site 8 has an adjacent picnic shelter for rainy days or group meals. Basic amenities are provided on-site: vault toilets and drinking water. As you head north from the more developed Metolius-area campgrounds and Camp Sherman, the road and facilities thin out and the atmosphere gets quieter, framed by the volcanic-formed landscape that begins near Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte (3,076 feet). Fishing and hiking are the main draws here. The spring-fed Metolius supports trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon, making riverside angling especially fly-fishing a common morning ritual for campers. Trails range from short river walks to routes that lead into subalpine forest; the long Metolius-Windigo Trail, which starts close to the river headwaters, extends more than 100 miles and is open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders seeking longer days or multi-day rides. Wildlife is part of the scene mule deer, coyote, cougar and many migratory birds are native to the area and the broader Deschutes National Forest offers additional recreation such as auto touring, mountain biking, boating, swimming, horseback riding and winter sports. Reservations and details are handled through Recreation.gov; note that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify it, so check current fees and seasonal availability there before you go.
