“basically, I don't like it, I like to show up when I want and leave when I want, without being on a schedule.”
“The only problem we had was finding the campground. From the tiny online map, we couldn't see that it was on the opposite side of the river from the other campgrounds. Fortunately, an employee at the fish hatchery gave us directions.”

Lower Canyon Creek Campground sits where Canyon Creek meets the upper Metolius River, roughly 18 miles northwest of Sisters along Highway 20 and a short drive up forest roads. The campground offers immediate access to the clear, spring-fed Metolius water so cold and transparent it's a favorite for fly-fishing; anglers commonly encounter rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon. Trails in the area range from gentle riverside walks to routes that climb into subalpine forest and volcanic terrain, and longer backcountry options connect into the Metolius-Windigo Trail, which begins near the river's headwaters. The landscape reflects recent volcanic activity: Metolius Springs bubbles out at the base of Black Butte (a 3,076-foot cinder cone) and dense conifer stands provide habitat for mule deer, coyotes and the occasional cougar, while migratory birds and native fish thrive in the riparian corridor. Nearby points of interest include the Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform, the Metolius Research Natural Area, the Metolius and Wizard Falls fish hatcheries, and the Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument (the Lava River Cave's northwest tube runs 5,211 feet). The campground itself is very small just five sites and each of those sites is configured to take either an RV or a tent, making it a good choice for mixed groups or small rigs, but it's a no-service site: there are no water or electrical hookups and water is not provided, so you must bring your own supply for drinking and cooking. Every campsite includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring with grill, and vault toilets are onsite; there is no potable water or sewer dump. Access requires driving on Forest Roads from Highway 20, so check current road conditions before you go, and note the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither Recreation.gov nor the campground manager can modify the booking. Beyond camping and fishing at the river, the broader Deschutes National Forest supports a wide range of activities biking, boating, auto touring, horseback riding, OHV routes, interpretive programs, winter sports, visitor centers and wildlife viewing so plan additional side trips if you have time.
