Scout Lake Group Campground sits at about 3,600 feet in the high-desert reaches of central Oregon inside Deschutes National Forest, shaded by a mixed conifer canopy and framed by volcanic landscapes extinct cones, lava flows and calderas are visible in the surrounding country. The campground is located just under a mile from Suttle Lake and right on the shore of Scout Lake, so water is the focal point: a large beach and shoreline trails are steps from the sites for swimming, wading and birding, and the lake supports easy shore fishing. Note that only non-motorized watercraft are allowed on Scout Creek, while Suttle Lake (less than a mile away) accommodates fishing, boating and water-skiing. The undeveloped wilderness around the campground supports deer, squirrels, trout and a variety of migratory birds, and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, Lava Lands Visitor Center in Bend and Newberry National Volcanic Monument are all within comfortable driving distance for day trips. The site infrastructure is geared toward groups as much as individual campers: there are 10 sites in total, nine of which can accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site; site #6 is a single-family site, sites 3, 4A, 4B, 5, 7 and 8 are doubles, and sites 1, 2 and 9 are triples. If the entire campground is reserved at once it can comfortably host up to about 100 guests. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; the campground also offers a large day-use area with 11 picnic tables and parking for roughly 50 vehicles, three vault toilets and a gravity-fed potable water system. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov be aware that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation and the site is reached from Sisters via Highway 20/126 and Forest Service Roads 2070 and 2066. The surrounding national forest provides an enormous array of recreation (auto touring, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and winter sports among them), so Scout Lake is well suited for group gatherings that want both easy lake access and quick entry to longer trail and backcountry options.
