North Davis Creek Campground sits on the western arm of Wickiup Reservoir where North Davis Creek spills into the lake, shaded by a mixed conifer canopy and framed by remnants of old lava flows. The site is currently closed until further notice; check Recreation.gov for updates before planning a trip. When open, the small campground provides 14 campsites each configured to accommodate either an RV or a tent and is reached from Bend by following Cascade Lakes Highway (Route 46) roughly 56 miles southwest; the campground lies on the east side of the highway. Sites are basic but practical: every campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, vault toilets and drinking water are available on site, and there are no water or electrical hookups, so RV and trailer users should plan to be self-sufficient. The reservoir is the main draw here: Wickiup's warmer surface water and cooler deep channels hold healthy populations of brown trout, kokanee and Coho salmon, plus rainbow and brook trout, whitefish and chub, making it a solid spot for anglers; boating, canoeing and swimming are common when conditions permit. Wildlife viewing can be rewarding along the shoreline and in the pines, and the broader Deschutes National Forest offers many other pursuits from hundreds of miles of trails and winter sports to interpretive programs and horse riding. If you want to expand your outing, Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Lava River Cave are about a 45-minute drive and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway threads the Cascades nearby. Note that Recreation.gov handles reservations and that once a reservation's start date has begun neither the Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation.
