Silver Valley Campground sits at about 7,400 feet on the east end of Lake Alpine in the Calaveras Ranger District of Stanislaus National Forest, roughly 60 miles east of Angels Camp on Highway 4. The site is small and forested, with 20 campsites in total 4 sites suitable for both RVs and tents and 16 RV sites and each site can accommodate up to 6 people, two tents and two vehicles. Campsites are equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings and vault toilets; there are no electric hookups. Pets are allowed. For hookups and creature comforts you'll need to visit nearby Lake Alpine Resort, where hot showers and a laundromat are available, and the Lake Alpine Lodge general store stocks firewood, camping and fishing supplies, food and apparel; the lodge also operates a restaurant, bar and boat rentals a short drive away. Recreation is a big part of the draw: Silver Valley sits near several trailheads and within the Lake Alpine Recreation Area, where fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating, swimming, rock climbing, OHV trail access and wildlife viewing are all possible, and Forest Service rangers run interpretive programs during summer months. Because of the high-elevation setting, seasonal access can change with snow campground opening and closing dates may shift and the site may open earlier or close later on a first-come, first-served basis as snow levels allow; current availability and any date adjustments are posted on the campground's information page. Expect the possibility of snow, rain, mud and cold or wet conditions at almost any time of year and plan clothing, vehicle gear and trip timing accordingly.
