Big Meadow sits at roughly 6,400 feet on the Stanislaus National Forest, east of Arnold along Highway 4 (about 21 25 miles from town). The site opens onto an open meadow framed by Sierra peaks, with views toward snow-capped ridgelines and the Great Central Valley on clear days. On the ground you'll find typical high-country wildlife marmots and squirrels are common, and coyotes and deer move through at dawn and dusk and the campground is a convenient home base for short hikes, birding and picnicking. If you want water access, Lake Alpine and Spicer Meadow Reservoir are both about a 15-minute drive and provide fishing, boating and swimming opportunities; beyond the immediate meadow, the broader Stanislaus National Forest offers a wide range of recreation from interpretive programs and a visitor center to off-highway vehicle trails and winter sports when conditions allow. Big Meadow has a total of 73 campsites: 61 sites are configured for both RVs and tents, and 12 are tent-only. The campground includes one group site (GRP) and a large loop identified as XXX with 49 sites; the group camp, which is easily reached from Highway 4, can accommodate up to 50 guests and 20 vehicles. On-site conveniences are basic but useful vault toilets and drinking water are available and pets are permitted. For details on fees, reservations, seasonal openings and any access requirements (road or vehicle restrictions), check current information from the U.S. Forest Service or recreation.gov before you go so you know whether the campground is open and if you need a reservation.
