Silvertip Campground sits in the high country of Stanislaus National Forest just under a mile west of Lake Alpine, reached via Highway 4 a short drive past the Bear Valley ski area. The lake is the focal point for day activities hiking, biking, boating, paddleboarding and kayaking, swimming in summer and fishing in season with a Forest Service trail dropping from the campground down to the water. The immediate landscape is mixed conifer forest and rocky lakeshore at roughly 7,400 feet elevation, so expect alpine conditions; wildlife sightings are common and can include squirrels, chipmunks, deer, marmots, coyotes, black bears, eagles and a variety of songbirds. Nearby Lake Alpine Lodge provides boat rentals, a restaurant and bar, a general store that stocks firewood and basic camping and fishing supplies, and hot showers and a laundromat for campers who prefer a little comfort after a day on the trail. Longer day trips from the area can include Big Trees State Park, Grover Hot Springs, Mercer Caverns and the Calaveras County wine country. The campground is compact 21 sites in total with a mix of accommodations for rigs and tents (exactly 16 RV sites and 5 sites designated for both RVs and tents). Individual sites can accommodate up to six people, three tents and two vehicles; each site includes a picnic table, a metal campfire ring and a toilet nearby, but there is no electrical service or sewer/water hookups. Pets are welcome. Reservations are offered for the summer season, but because this is a high-elevation campground the season can shift with snow levels: Silvertip may open earlier or close later on a first-come, first-served basis as conditions allow, and any seasonal adjustments are posted on the Forest Service page plan for the possibility of snow, mud and cold/wet weather any time of year. Forest rangers also run interpretive programs in summer, and the larger Stanislaus National Forest supports OHV access and winter-sports opportunities beyond the lakeshore.
