“Super clean, the camp host was awesome. Beautiful location. The water was off but we were warned and it was no big deal to bring some extra. Awesome experience all around.”
“Our campsites designated no. Was changed. We were now in a different site. But because the camp was mostly empty the camp host said switching to our original location was OK. A big camp like this and no available potable water is a disgrace. Turn the system on.”

Silver Lake East sits at about 7,200 feet on the north end of a 200-acre granite-basin lake, backed by Thunder Mountain and a mixed-conifer forest. The campground's 39 sites are arranged around meadows and a small central pond that attracts ducks the pond isn't visible from the campsites, but wildflowers and open views make the area feel airy and alpine in summer. Trails leave directly from the campground to lakeshores and swimming beaches; the Granite Lake Trail (which begins at the Minkalo trailhead on Silver Lake's east shore) climbs across Squaw Creek on a wooden bridge, splits toward Plasse's or Granite Lake, and from the southeast end of Granite Lake another spur leads to Hidden Lake. Hikers often use these short, steep routes to access high alpine basins, while anglers head to Silver Lake for stocked Rainbow, German Brown and Mackinaw trout. Silver Lake West sits opposite on the far side of Highway 88, offering more trailheads and access to the Silver Fork of the American River, and the Carson Pass Highway running past the lake is a scenic drive for photographers and day-trippers; Lake Tahoe and its ski areas lie a short drive to the north. Facilities are straightforward and geared to quiet, self-reliant camping: vault toilets, drinking water, campfire rings and picnic tables are provided, and some sites include bear-proof food-storage lockers. Of the 39 campsites, 29 accommodate both RVs and tents while 10 are tent-only; single units are limited to two vehicles and six people. A nearby lodge supplies a pay phone, a restaurant, boat rentals and a public boat ramp. Expect to pay a recreation fee for overnight use (amounts vary by location and activity) and a non-refundable reservation fee when you book $8 online, $9 via the call center or $3 in person and note that change and cancellation service fees may apply. A $10 service fee is withheld from refunds, cut-off windows for advanced changes are typically four days before arrival, and same-day or day-before cancellations will forfeit the first night's use fee in addition to the $10 service fee. The campground is reached from Pioneer by following State Route 88 east (about 36 37 miles) and is roughly 50 miles east of Jackson, making it a high-country base for anglers, hikers and people seeking lake access rather than large developed-park amenities.
