Kit Carson Campground sits along the west fork of the Carson River in Woodfords Canyon and is set among Jeffrey pines, quaking aspens and steep canyon walls. The campground has 12 sites total: nine sites are configured to accommodate both tents and smaller RVs, and three are tent-only, with several campsites located right at the water's edge for easy access to riverbank fishing and quiet river views. Each site includes a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-resistant food storage box; the campground provides drinking water, vault toilets, and garbage containers. A camp host is on site during the season and firewood is available for sale. The aspens turn vivid in autumn, making fall visits particularly scenic, while the limited size of the campground helps keep the experience intimate and relatively quiet compared with larger forest campgrounds. The surrounding area opens into a wide range of outdoor options: anglers can fish the Carson River and boat on nearby lakes, and trailheads for the Mokelumne Wilderness, the Pacific Crest Trail and the Tahoe Rim Trail (a trailhead is within roughly five miles) are all a short drive away. Rock climbing, canyon exploration, horseback riding and mountain biking are all supported in the broader Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and the forest also offers hunting, OHV routes and winter-sport opportunities depending on season and conditions. Services are nearby Sorensen's Resort offers groceries and a restaurant, Grover Hot Springs State Park in Markleeville has public soaking pools, and Lake Tahoe and the communities of Minden and Carson City (with additional dining and entertainment options) are within easy driving distance. Kit Carson is accessed from Highway 88 through Woodfords Canyon (from South Lake Tahoe, follow Hwy 89 over Luther Pass to the 88/89 junction; from the Carson Valley take Hwy 395 to Hwy 88 and head into Woodfords Canyon), and campers should check with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Headquarters for current fees, seasonal dates and reservation policies before planning a trip.
