About

At 7,880 feet in a mix of Ponderosa pine stands and open meadows, Jemez Falls Campground sits along the East Fork Jemez Wild and Scenic River and offers a straightforward, well-equipped base for exploring the Jemez Mountains. The campground has 50 sites that can accommodate both tents and RVs, divided among four loops Loop 1 with 18 sites, Loop 2 with 13, Loop 3 with 9, and Loop 4 with 10 which all have paved internal roads and paved access from NM Highway 4. Individual sites come with a picnic table and a metal fire ring, vault toilets are available for sanitation, drinking water is supplied from spigots around the loops, and trash dumpsters make it easy to pack out refuse; a campground host is on duty during the summer season. Trailers and RVs up to 40 feet can be driven into the campground, but there are no electrical or sewer hookups, so plan accordingly for power and waste needs. Recreation centers on camping, day hikes and fishing the half-mile trail to Jemez Falls, the largest waterfall in the Jemez Mountains, is the campground's signature outing, while the East Fork river and nearby meadows are good for photography and wildlife viewing. The broader Santa Fe National Forest and the Jemez National Recreation Area add biking, picnicking, winter sports and opportunities to stay in historic fire lookouts or cabins along the Jemez Mountain Trail scenic byway; Valles Caldera National Preserve and Bandelier National Monument are a short drive away. Generator policies have varied by season: for the 2022 season loop 4 was designated a non-generator area while loops 1 3 allowed generator use from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM (earlier seasons, such as 2021, listed loops 3 and 4 as non-generator) check the forest website or reservation site for the current rules before you go. The campground has historically charged a modest nightly fee during peak season (for example, the 2019 peak rate for a standard non-electric site was $10 per night from May 15 September 10), so verify current fees and reservation availability ahead of your trip; expect warm days and cool nights at this elevation and come prepared for mountain weather.
