Paliza Campground occupies a forested ridge above the Jemez Valley, with a small stream running along one edge and sandstone cliffs on nearby mesas that are especially good for photos and short explorations. The site was recently refurbished but still shows remnants of its 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps base camp you can spot log lean-tos and adirondack shelters with rock fireplaces among the sites. There are 12 campsites in all: 4 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 5 RV-only sites, and 3 tent-only sites, plus a group site that can hold up to 100 people. Roads through the campground are paved, and each site has a picnic table, lantern post, and a campfire ring with a grill; accessible vault toilets are provided. Important to note: there is no water at the campground, so plan to bring your own supply, and a small tract of private land lies immediately north of the loop please respect property boundaries. The campground is a practical base for hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic drives through the Jemez Ranger District, with off-road vehicle routes and an extensive network of hiking and mountain bike trails in the surrounding forest. For a wider view of the landscape, Cerro Pelado Scenic Overlook sits about 11 miles from the campground; the Jemez Pueblo and Walatowa Visitor Center offering cultural exhibits, shopping and dining are also about 11 miles away, while the town of Ponderosa (with a local winery tasting room) is roughly 5 miles southwest via Forest Road 10. Some campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis; for current reservation rules, fees and seasonal closures check with the Santa Fe National Forest office before you go. The broader Santa Fe National Forest supports many outdoor pursuits biking, fishing, winter sports, overnight stays in fire lookouts/cabins and more though not all of those are provided directly within the Paliza Campground itself.
