Tetilla Peak Recreation Area sits on the east side of Cochiti Lake, about halfway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque on the Rio Grande, and lies within the boundaries of the Pueblo de Cochiti Indian Reservation visitors must observe Pueblo regulations and avoid any lands closed to the public. The lake itself is formed by one of the largest earth-fill dams in the country, and the recreation area occupies high-desert foothills of the Jemez Mountains at roughly 5,343 feet elevation. The landscape is a mix of juniper and piñon with open grasslands, and wildlife sightings are common: deer, coyote, river otters, rabbits, beaver and even occasional black bear have been seen on the east side, while four osprey nesting platforms around the lake make for reliable raptor viewing. Cochiti's sheltered water and steady winds make the lake well suited to paddlecraft and wind-driven boats, and anglers fish for bass, crappie, walleye, catfish, sunfish, pike and trout. The campground is arranged in two loops and contains 45 campsites total; all 45 are available for both RVs and tents, though services differ by loop. Cholla Loop contains the electric sites each site has a shelter, picnic table and grill, and the loop provides scattered water spigots, a dump station and a large restroom and shower building. Coyote Loop runs on a partially paved road and offers non-electric sites with picnic tables and grills, scattered water spigots and a centrally located restroom and shower building. For water access, Tetilla's boat ramp includes parking and a courtesy dock, and the Santa Cruz day-use area on the lake's west side provides shade structures, restrooms and two fishing docks. Activities at Cochiti Lake include boating, camping, fishing, picnicking, water sports and wildlife viewing (there are also playground and park sport facilities and a visitor center in the broader recreation area). Fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability are not listed here, so plan to check the recreation area's official information before you go; from Albuquerque, the approach is north on I-25 to the SR-16 turnoff toward Tetilla Peak/La Bajada.
