Ponderosa Group Campground sits at about 7,600 feet on the Pajarito Plateau, roughly six miles beyond Bandelier's entrance on NM-4 and a short drive from the Los Alamos/White Rock corridor. The campground shares its name with the Ponderosa Trailhead, so your group can drop packs and head directly into ponderosa pine forest that links to more than 70 miles of trails across mesas and deep canyons; the Middle Frijoles Trail from here runs about eight miles into Frijoles Canyon and the park's Main Loop. Bandelier's landscape volcanic tuff, canyon bottoms with riparian strips, and higher mixed-conifer stands frames opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing (mule deer, Abert's squirrels, many resident and migratory birds), and visits to the park's archeological sites and petroglyphs. Note that Frijoles Canyon and the Visitor Center are reachable only by the park shuttle from mid-May through mid-October, but outside that shuttle season you may drive directly to those areas; popular nearby destinations include Los Alamos, Valles Caldera National Preserve, and, about 40 miles south, Santa Fe. The campground is configured for groups rather than individual backcountry parties: there are exactly two group sites, each able to accommodate between 10 and 50 people, and both are designated to handle tents while also allowing one RV per site to park in the site's parking area (no hook-ups). Facilities are basic but functional vault toilets, picnic tables, a picnic shelter, campfire rings, food-storage lockers, and drinking water when it is not freezing (water is reliably available only from mid-May through mid-October; it is turned off during months with potential freezing conditions). Ponderosa is open year-round, but same-day reservations are not allowed and check-in is at 4:00 p.m. with check-out at 11:30 a.m. Public events are prohibited; private events within site capacity may be allowed with a special use permit (call (505) 672-3861 ext. 1102). All campers 16 and older must have park entrance passes (7-day vehicle pass $25, motorcycle $20, individual $15) displayed in vehicles; passes can be purchased at the automated fee machine at the entrance station or at the Visitor Center during its 9 a.m. 5 p.m. hours.
