About an hour and a half from Albuquerque and roughly 11 miles east of the small town of Cuba on New Mexico State Highway 126, Rio de las Vacas Campground sits in the pine-covered slopes of the Jemez Mountains where a cool creek runs along several sites and an open meadow opens up toward mountain views. The campground has 15 campsites; the site type breakdown is 15 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites, and most sites come with paved RV pads, tent pads, a picnic table and a metal fire ring. Roads through the campground are paved, there are vault toilets, trash receptacles and an on-site host to answer questions however hookup utilities are not specified here, so plan for primitive services beyond the paved pads and bring your own water or check current listings before you go. If you need supplies, Cuba with lodging, restaurants and gas is the closest town about a 15 20 minute drive away. The setting feeds directly into the activities: anglers can fish local streams and the nearby San Gregorio Reservoir, while hikers and backpackers use Rio de las Vacas as a convenient base for explorations of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. The wilderness has gentle grade changes on its trails and three principal trailheads San Gregorio, Palomas and Los Pinos all within driving distance, making both day hikes and beginner-friendly backpacking trips practical from the campground. In season you'll notice migrating birds moving through the pines and, in autumn, the distant bugling of elk; the broader Santa Fe National Forest also supports biking, picnicking, winter sports and even overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins, offering a range of ways to structure a visit. Before you head out, check with the Forest Service or recreation.gov for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings so you arrive prepared.
