Berry Bend sits on the western shore of Harry S. Truman Lake amid the rolling hills and rocky bluffs of the Ozark Plateau, where mature oak, hickory and scattered cedar frame views of the reservoir and the powerplant bluff. The campground is part of a larger recreation complex that includes the Harry S. Truman Visitor Center atop Kaysinger Bluff with exhibits about the Osage River Valley and a powerplant exhibit area nearby; from the observation deck you'll often see waterfowl, ospreys and bald eagles riding the thermals. Truman Lake is a major draw for anglers and tournament fishermen crappie, bass, walleye, paddlefish and both blue and channel catfish are commonly taken, and roughly 8,800 acres of standing timber remain in the lake to create productive fishing structure. Wildlife viewers and outdoor enthusiasts will also find whitetail deer, turkey and a variety of water birds across the park, and several miles of trails within the Berry Bend area support hiking and horseback riding: the Park Trail is 2.5 miles and good for beginners, the West Trail runs about 10 miles through steep ridges and valleys, and the East Trail stretches roughly 16 miles and offers several lake overlooks, with cut-through options for riders who don't want to do the full loop. The campground itself is open year-round and contains 103 sites in total 101 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and two tent-only sites arranged primarily in two loops. Loop B has seven very spacious sites with full hookups (50-amp electricity, water and sewer) and a flush toilet; there are no showers in B, so campers who need them should use the shower house in Loop C. Loop C contains 94 sites with 30-amp electric service and provides the bulk of visitor facilities: flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station. On-site features include a boat ramp and playgrounds, making the area well suited to boating, water sports, family camping and picnicking; the surrounding park supports additional activities such as biking, OHV use in designated areas, concession services, swimming sites and wildlife viewing. Berry Bend is accessed by traveling south from Z Highway on the Berry Bend Access Road for about two miles; for up-to-date information on fees, reservations and any seasonal restrictions, check the park's reservation system or contact the visitor center before you go.
