“It's a great site and would be a fantastic experience. The beach is exquisite. But the people on the private property at the south end were EXTREMELY loud all day and into the late evening. I camp in Hiawatha National Forest for the peace and quiet and they totally ruined that.”
“There is poison ivy next to trail leading to the lake”
“The view and water were beautiful, and the campsite was spacious. The big downer was the insane amount of biting flies and mosquitoes. We were eaten alive all day. ”

East Lake Campsites sits on the shores of a 53-acre inland lake in the Munising/Rapid River Manistique districts of Hiawatha National Forest, offering a quietly rustic experience under a mix of hardwoods and pines. There are three campsites in total (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 3), and each site is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents (site type breakdown: 3 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites). Site 1 perches on a wooded hill on the lake's western shore (100 ft. x 75 ft.) and is the largest, suitable for up to three families (max 24 people); it has the easiest vehicle access and can handle small trailers. Sites 2 and 3 are smaller family sites (site 2: 45 ft. x 35 ft., site 3: 55 ft. x 50 ft., each with a max of 8 people); the access roads to 2 and especially 3 are narrow and winding, and trailers are not recommended for site 3. There is NO drinking water at the campground, and primitive toilets are provided at two sites (Sites 2 and 3). A back-in boat launch sits just past Site 1 on FR2650 but is unimproved, shallow and sandy carry-in boats are recommended. The lake supports straightforward water recreation and fishing: anglers can expect largemouth bass, perch, bluegill and bullheads, and the jump into the water is best at Site 3 (swimming is not recommended from Sites 1 and 2). Within a short drive you'll find trailheads for hiking, biking and horse riding, plus a fishing pier and outfitters offering kayak/canoe and boat rentals; basic supplies, fuel, ice and MDNR licenses are available in Steuben about two miles northwest on County Road 437. Because these sites are rustic with few to no amenities and no on-site potable water, check with the forest office for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings before you go local information is available at (906) 474-6442, and general Hiawatha National Forest information at (906) 387-2512.
