Colwell Lake Campground sits on the eastern shore of the 145-acre Colwell Lake in the center of Michigan's Hiawatha National Forest, about 25 miles north of Manistique on State Route 94 with a short spur on Forest Road 2246 to reach the loop. The campground contains 40 sites in all: 38 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites located along the lakeshore, plus a group site that holds up to 24 people. Campsites come with campfire rings, lantern posts and tent pads; vault toilets and drinking water are placed throughout the facility. A sandy swimming beach lies beside a picnic area outfitted with pedestal grills and tables for families or small groups, and boaters will find a boat ramp and launching pier near the campground entrance with room for parking and trailer turn-around. The accessible fishing pier makes shoreline angling easier for visitors with mobility needs. Note: Discount only applies to base rate. Note: A $4.00 per night electrical hookup fee applies to Electric sites. Recreation at Colwell Lake is straightforward and lake-focused: an excellent swimming beach, boat access and fishing for largemouth bass, northern pike, crappie, pumpkinseed sunfish, perch and bluegill. A leisurely 2 mile hiking and snowshoeing trail leaves the campground for short walks through mixed deciduous and conifer forest, and several sites offer partial water views. Beyond the immediate shoreline, the Hiawatha National Forest provides additional options for biking, horseback riding, broader boating and water sports, overnight stays in fire lookout cabins, interpretive programs, and wildlife viewing; nearby Big Island, Fish and Straits lakes are all within roughly 25 miles.
