Quinn D ★ 5 · Jul 2025Great spot! Quite secluded and very very buggy. The trail to get to the campsite is a bit bumpy but is still manageable in a sedan, just take it slow. The campsite itself is quite spacious and has a campfire pit. The bugs are no joke though. The lake the campsite is on is a bit swampy so its mosquito heaven, definitely beware. But aside from the bugs it was great. I have AT&T and had 1-2 bars of service, so it worked but just barely.
Dian W ★ 4 · Jul 2023The drive is quite bumpy and narrow. It was a bit of a chore getting our 19' camper backed into the spot. A less experienced person would probably struggle but once we were set up it was amazing. Quiet for the most part. You can sometimes hear road noise. We caught bluegill and a few tiny Perch. We did have some people pull up at 10pm one night to fish, but they were considerate. Mosquitoes are ferocious so bring your bug spray. Overall very pleased.

RAPID RIVER/MANISTIQUE RANGER DISTRICT
Open in Google Maps ↗
Crooked Lake Campsite is a single, small site on the east shore of a 190-acre inland lake within the Munising/Rapid River/Manistique Ranger Districts of Hiawatha National Forest. The campsite footprint is 35 by 35 feet and is level, enough for one family and a trailer; the site is listed to accommodate both RV and tent camping and has a maximum capacity of eight people. This is a very rustic spot with no toilets and no drinking water, so plan to bring your own supplies and pack out waste as required. Boat access to the lake is carry-in only and the launch is shared with the public, so anglers or day users may pass through the campsite to reach the water. Crooked Lake is lined with private homes and a private resort along much of its shoreline, so while the single Forest Service site offers a quieter, more solitary campsite than a busy campground, the lake itself can be active with local traffic. Fishing is the main draw at Crooked Lake: the fishery supports bluegill, crappie and northern pike, with the occasional smallmouth bass; remember Michigan fishing licenses are required. Swimming at this site is described as poor, but canoeing, kayaking and other carry-in boating are possible from the site access. Within a few minutes' drive you'll find trailheads for hiking, biking and horse riding, a fishing pier, and businesses offering bait, grocery items, gasoline, and kayak/canoe rentals; the nearest full services and MDNR licenses are in Steuben, about four miles southwest on County Road 437. Access to the site is reached from M-94 north of Manistique (roughly 25 miles), turning onto Forest Road 2246 (Clear Lake Road) and then following the short hard-pack sandy spur (FR 2661) to the site the road is passable for trailers but expect a rustic surface. For up-to-date information on seasons, fees or reservations check with local Forest Service staff at (906) 474-6442 or (906) 387-2512 before you go.
