Clinton M ★ 3 · Jul 2022There was bears in camp. Camp host and forest service didn't seem to care.
Jennifer F ★ 2 · Jan 2020We went in August and were unaware that poisonous caterpillars would literally be EVERYWHERE!! They were covering the bathroom doors, inside the bathroom, all over the water pump, and falling out of trees. Not sure if this happens every year or if August 2019 was a fluke of a year, but it was so bad that our group decided to only stay one night of our two night stay. We get that we are camping in the wilderness, but it would have been nice to see that warning online instead of when we arrived at the site. Plus, this is site is right off the highway so you do hear cars all night long.

Cold Springs Campground sits at about 3,878 feet on the west side of State Highway 55 along the North Fork of the Payette River, roughly 41 miles north of Boise and just past the small community of Banks. The canyon here is forested with a mix of ponderosa and lodgepole pines, and most of the single campsite is shaded by the trees. The campground is very small it contains one site that accommodates both RVs and tents and the site is outfitted with a picnic table and a campfire ring; vault toilets are provided. Because the loop is immediately above the highway, expect some traffic noise. Summer daytime highs commonly reach the 80s to 90s, while nights cool down considerably. Recreational opportunities center on the river: the North Fork of the Payette is a draw for advanced kayakers, and whitewater rafting is available nearby on the Main and South Forks. Anglers will find whitefish and rainbow trout in the river, and there is a boat/kayak launch near the Payette access point. Beyond the immediate riverside activities, the broader Boise National Forest offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, OHV routes, hunting, winter sports and wildlife viewing. Because Cold Springs is so small, check with the Boise National Forest office for current fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and any access requirements before you go.
