“The campsite was lovely, but our neighboring campers were unfortunately really noisy. If we returned, we'd try to avoid a weekend.”

River Side Campground sits at about 5,300 feet along the Deadwood River at the north end of Deadwood Reservoir, a quiet, relatively remote corner of Boise National Forest. The small site contains 8 campsites total; all eight are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and several provide true waterfront access with direct steps to the river. Facilities are basic: drinking water is provided, roads and parking spurs are dirt, and a vault toilet sits up a short hill above the loop. The campground is shaded by a mixed-growth pine stand and brightened by abundant summer wildflowers, and nearly every site has a clear view of the river. There is a $5 fee for vehicles entering the campground for day use. The reservoir's remoteness keeps boat traffic light and creates good fishing opportunities for Chinook and Kokanee salmon as well as rainbow and cutthroat trout (Atlantic salmon are also reported), while boating, water skiing, canoeing and kayaking are popular on the lake. A public boat ramp is about 2 miles away at Cozy Cove Campground, so larger launch facilities are not on-site but are readily accessible by short drive. The surrounding area has a network of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicle use, and the broader Boise National Forest offers additional recreation from picnicking and wildlife viewing to winter sports and the chance to visit backcountry fire lookouts or rental cabins. Access from Boise follows State Highway 55 north, then the Banks-Lowman corridor onto Highway 21 and Forest Road 579 to the Deadwood Reservoir area; check with the Forest Service for current road conditions, seasonal openings and any reservation rules before you go.
