“Nice and peaceful place to camp. Lots of hiking trails too. ”
“We loved staying at Grayback. There were so many places you could put up a tent. We were at the group site which comfortably fit all 25 of us. ”

Grayback Campground sits about 36 miles northeast of Boise along State Highway 21 (the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway), roughly two miles south of historic Idaho City. The site occupies a hillside around 4,200 feet in elevation, shaded by ponderosa pines with frequent summer wildflowers and regular wildlife sightings. The facility provides 14 individual campsites each set up to accommodate both RVs and tents plus two larger group sites with paved pads, serving tables, grills and campfire circles; Group Site A can hold up to 150 people and 20 vehicles, while Site B fits up to 100 people and 15 vehicles, and both can be reserved together for larger gatherings. Single- and double-family sites include a picnic table, lantern post and a campfire ring with grill; vault toilets, trash collection and drinking water are available throughout the campground, though note the current water-system update: the group-site pump is out of service and group campers should use the two hand pumps in the main campground downhill. A campground host is stationed directly across the road for assistance. Recreation at Grayback centers on easy access to Mores Creek, which can be reached just below the campground and is regularly fished for whitefish and rainbow trout, and on the short Grayback Loop Trail that begins inside the site and makes a roughly one-mile walk. Beyond the immediate campground there are extensive trail networks north of Idaho City for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle use, and the area turns into a backcountry skiing and snowmobiling zone in winter. Highway 21 continues over Mores Creek Summit toward attractions such as hot springs, historic mining sites, Gold Fork and Banner Ridge, so Grayback makes a convenient base for day trips into the broader Boise National Forest. For fees, reservations and seasonal access information, check the Forest Service or recreation.gov listings before you go.
