Caleb L ★ 5 · Jun 2025We had a great time camping at Hayfork!
Sage I ★ 5 · Oct 2024Beautiful campsite, well kept, and very private. Be aware that trash was handled pack in/pack out when we visited, but that was previously communicated in an email from the USFS. The stream was slow and cold in October, but we still had fun dipping our toes and climbing on the logs. Lot's of great small trails and the main road for a night walk with flashlights. We had a school trip with elementary kids and it was nice to have the whole camp to run around, however, there were several other parties who pulled in looking for a campsite and ultimately ended up turning around, despite it saying reserved at the front gate.
Vicki C ★ 5 · Jul 2024The campground was wonderful. The sites across the stream are more private and if you want the group to be together they are far away. However, if you want some of the group to have more privacy they are nice. The sites closest to the stream have a lot of stream noise so put your light sleepers in other locations as the sound may bother them.

Hayfork Group Campground sits along Highway 21 about 11 12 miles north of Idaho City on the east side of the road, at roughly 5,100 feet on the lower slope of a ponderosa pine hillside. The campground consists of a single reservable group site that can host up to 50 people and is set in an open, mostly sun-exposed clearing with limited shade; wildflowers and local wildlife are commonly seen in the surrounding area. Facilities at the site are straightforward and geared to a large group: multiple picnic tables, a grill and a campfire circle with benches, plus vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection. Parking spurs are gravel and the group site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, but there are no listed hookups or individual sites beyond the single group area. Because the campground sits beside Highway 21 with Mores Creek running between the road and the site, expect some traffic noise and easy visual access to the creek. The campground is a practical base for creek fishing and multi-use trail access rather than a destination for secluded solitude. Mores Creek, which flows nearby, supports whitefish and rainbow trout fishing right from the corridor, and a network of trails in the immediate area supports hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle travel; in winter the same terrain attracts backcountry skiers and snowmobilers. Beyond day trips on the trails, Highway 21 designated the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway winds over Mores Creek Summit toward Gold Fork and Banner Ridge, passing historic sites and hot springs pools that make easy half-day or day drives. If you're organizing a family reunion, small wedding or group outing, reserve the single site in advance and plan around its exposed, creekside setting and highway access.
