“No cellular, a few miles to town. A really wonderfully spaced-out campground, one of the best in Colorado for sure. ”

Difficult Campground sits about five miles southeast of Aspen on Highway 82, right along the banks of the Roaring Fork River. The campground's 47 sites all configured to accept both RVs and tents are set among a mixed stand of aspen, cottonwood, pine, fir, scrub oak and spruce, and a number of spurs drop down right to the river's edge. Standard amenities are straightforward and practical: picnic tables, metal campfire rings, vault toilets, and potable drinking water; there are no electrical hookups. Firewood is sold on site. Drivers should note that radius turns in the campground are tight, brush encroaches on some roadways and spurs, and large vehicles face a routing constraint vehicles over 35 feet are prohibited over Independence Pass but can reach the campground via Aspen. The Roaring Fork is the campground's defining feature for recreation: it's deep, swift and clear, home to rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout, and anglers will find long reaches of classic fly-fishing water. The river is also navigable by small craft over much of its length toward the Colorado River, so paddlers and rafters can plan short runs or downstream floats; nearby hiking trails provide quick access to higher country for day trips. Wildlife is common along the valley elk, bighorn sheep and a variety of alpine species use the surrounding forest and ridgelines and the broader White River National Forest supports a wide array of activities including biking, boating, horseback riding, hunting, winter sports and interpretive programs. Reservations and policies are managed through Recreation.gov; be aware that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify it.
