“Could not ride ATV. This was disappointing as I can write it in any other national forest? Also, no water at upper campgrounds only water at lower one. The camp host was great!”
“Overall nice campsite, tucked away from the two others nearby. No map on rec.gov currently but there are YouTube drive through videos you can use to see the layout (wish I did before I booked the site next to the bathroom). ”
“Great experience. Jeff the host is a good guy and loves his job. You are lucky to have him there and I hope to see him again next year.”

Little Mattie Campground sits at about 7,800 feet on the shore of Ruedi Reservoir inside White River National Forest, roughly 14 miles east of Basalt. The campground's 18 sites are configured to accommodate both tents and towable RVs (all 18 sites are suitable for RVs and tents), with a 30-foot maximum length for trailers and RVs; none of the sites have electrical hookups. Each campsite comes with a picnic table, a metal campfire ring, and a bear box for food storage, while vault toilets and drinking water are available nearby. Sites are relatively open to the sky, making evening stargazing easy when conditions are clear. Vehicle access to the area is straightforward from I-70 (Glenwood Springs/Highway 82 to Basalt) and then out Frying Pan Road to the Ruedi Complex entrance; check Recreation.gov for up-to-date seasonal openings and fees. Note the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. The campground is positioned for water- and trail-based outdoor activities. Ruedi Reservoir provides a launch point for boating, swimming, and water skiing, and interpretive programs are offered seasonally at the reservoir complex. Below Ruedi Dam the Fryingpan River is a renowned trout fishery a Gold Medal Waters reach where anglers target rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout that feed on Mysis shrimp; special regulations here require fishing with artificial flies and lures only and mandate releasing all trout except brown trout (limit two fish over 14 inches). For hikers and mountain bikers the Ruedi Trail starts near the boat ramp parking area (trailhead about 200 feet north of the nearby Jeep trail) and climbs roughly eight miles with more than 3,000 feet of gain to the top of Red Mountain, where broad views reward the climb. Beyond the immediate lakeshore and trail system, the broader White River National Forest supports a wide range of activities from biking and horseback riding to wildlife viewing and winter sports so Little Mattie can serve as a basecamp for both short outings and longer explorations.
