About

Perched above Ruedi Reservoir at the bottom of a broad valley, Chapman Campground sits alongside the Fryingpan River amid stands of lodgepole pine; several campsites are right at the water's edge for easy access to the river. The site accommodates a range of camping styles: there are 76 campsites in total 66 that accept both RVs and tents, 2 RV-only sites, and 8 tent-only sites plus a separate group site. Campsites are arranged in loops (Loop A: 6 sites, Loop C: 5 sites, Loop D: 6 sites, Loop E: 16 sites, Loop F: 15 sites, Loop G: 14 sites, Loop H: 13 sites), and potable water is available in Loops F, G and H. Basic amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, and trash and recycling collection; there are no electrical hookups. Access is most easily made from the Roaring Fork Valley: head south from Basalt on Fryingpan Road for about 29 miles to reach Chapman. Note the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. The campground serves as a strong base for fishing and short, low-key outdoor activities: the Fryingpan River runs through the site and is famed for fly fishing, with large rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout especially plentiful downstream of Ruedi Dam in the area known locally as the "toilet bowl." That stretch has been designated Gold Medal Waters and carries special rules fishing only with artificial flies and lures and mandatory release of all trout except brown trout (limit two brown trout over 14 inches) and Chapman Reservoir itself allows angling from shore while motorized watercraft are prohibited. On-site recreation includes a nature trail accessible from the campground plus a horseshoe pit and volleyball court; beyond the campground the White River National Forest offers a wide range of activities (hiking, biking, boating, horseback riding, auto touring, wildlife viewing, winter sports and more) and diverse wildlife such as bighorn sheep and elk that depend on the surrounding wilderness and clean streams.
