Dearhamer Campground sits at about 7,800 feet on the Fryingpan River above Ruedi Reservoir, roughly 20 22 miles east of Basalt on Fryingpan River Road. The site is compact and straightforward: 12 campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs (all 12 sites are configured for both uses), each furnished with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring. There are no electrical hookups, so plan for off-grid power or battery use; RVs are limited to 35 feet in length. Basic services include a drinking water hydrant and vault toilets expect a simple, river-focused campsite rather than full-service amenities. Access is via the paved Fryingpan River Road; because this portion of the White River National Forest experiences four distinct seasons, check current road and site availability before you go and be prepared for changing conditions at higher elevations. What draws most people here is the water: the Fryingpan below Ruedi Dam is world-class trout water and that stretch has been designated Gold Medal Waters. Anglers should note special rules artificial flies and lures only, all trout must be released except brown trout, and there is a 2-fish limit for trout over 14 inches and the river supports large rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout that feed on mysis shrimp from the reservoir (the local "toilet bowl" is a well-known productive run). The reservoir and surrounding area also offer boating, swimming and water-skiing, and the Ruedi Trail north of the lake begins near the boat ramp: it's an 8-mile route climbing more than 3,000 feet to Red Table Mountain for wide views. Wildlife viewing opportunities are strong bighorn sheep on the ridges, elk at dusk, and alpine species like pika and ptarmigan in higher terrain and Aspen's dining and resort amenities are within easy reach for errands or an evening out. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; check the site for fees and seasonal openings, and remember that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov contact center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation.
