Little Maud Campground sits at about 7,800 feet on the shore of Ruedi Reservoir, roughly 14 miles east of Basalt in the White River National Forest. The 21 sites here are all configured to accommodate both tents and RVs (maximum RV length 35 feet) and open onto lake views framed by mixed conifer forest and clear high-country night skies. Picnic tables and metal campfire rings are provided at each site, and visitors have access to drinking water and vault toilets; there are no electrical hookups. The reservoir and the downstream Fryingpan River define much of the campground's character: Ruedi Dam releases produce a stretch of gold-medal trout water known locally as the "toilet bowl," where large rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout feed on Mysis shrimp. Anglers should note the special regulations on the fly-fishing stretch below the dam only artificial flies and lures are allowed, all trout except brown trout must be released, and there is a two-fish limit for trout over 14 inches. Recreation at Little Maud ranges from waterborne to backcountry: boaters, swimmers and water skiers use the reservoir, and the Ruedi Trail north of the lake climbs to Red Table Mountain (trailhead about 200 feet north of the Jeep trail near the boat ramp and parking lot); that eight-mile route gains roughly 3,000 feet and rewards hikers with wide panoramas. The White River National Forest beyond the campground supports many more pursuits biking and auto touring, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV routes, hunting, winter sports, visitor centers and interpretive programs, plus plentiful wildlife viewing (bighorn sheep, elk, pika, ptarmigan and diverse trout populations). Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify it, so check current availability and any fees or seasonal access details on the reservation site before you go. To reach the Ruedi Complex, follow Highway 82 through Basalt and take Fryingpan Road east toward the reservoir.
