About

Perched at about 4,000 feet in the floor of Yosemite Valley, Upper Pines Campground sits among a mixed forest of California black oak, Ponderosa pine, incense-cedar, white fir and manzanita, with the Merced River and Yosemite's signature granite cliffs always in view. The campground is right where many classic valley routes begin: easy, paved walks to Mirror Lake and the meadow and the grueling 14 16 mile trail up to Half Dome (note that a Half Dome permit is required) both start near the Pines campgrounds, and river rafters launch on the Merced when flows allow. Within the broader park there are opportunities for rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing, biking, auto touring, cross-country skiing and wildlife viewing, plus ranger programs, guided bus tours and art-center workshops so Upper Pines is as much a basecamp for active days as it is a place to sit by the fire and listen to the night sounds of the High Sierra. Upper Pines is the largest of Yosemite Valley's three reservation campgrounds, with 237 sites in total: 204 sites that accept both RVs and tents, 29 designated RV-only sites, and 4 tent-only sites. Roads and parking spurs are paved, and each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring and a bear-resistant food-storage locker; the campground also provides flush toilets and drinking water, and Yosemite's free shuttle stops at the entrance. Nearby Curry Village supplies showers (for a fee), a small market, restaurants and an activities desk. Reservations must be made through recreation.gov up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PST (for example, on January 15 you can book arrival dates from May 15 June 14), and campsites often sell out within minutes be logged in before the release time because you can only add sites to your cart while signed in and the recreation.gov call center cannot access extra inventory. Cancellation policy: more than 48 hours before arrival you pay a $10 transaction fee; within 48 hours you forfeit the first night plus $10 (one-night reservations receive no refund but are not charged an extra $10); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee in addition to the first night. To reach Yosemite Valley, follow Highway 41 north from Fresno, Highway 140 east from Merced, or Highway 120 east from Manteca and proceed to the valley camps.
