Tuolumne Meadows Campground sits high in Yosemite's alpine country at about 8,600 feet along Tioga Road, five miles from the Tioga Pass Entrance Station, and it represents the broad subalpine meadows and granite domes that define the park's high country. Note that the campground is undergoing a major rehabilitation project and will remain closed for the 2024 season, so plan any high-country visit around that closure. When open, the campground's 142 sites are split into 80 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 62 tent-only sites, arranged across a series of loops: A001 A075 contains 32 sites; B001 B039 contains 24 sites; B040 B049, C95, and Group Camp A G are listed as 2 sites; C001 C036, C072, C075, and C077 C094 total 28 sites; C37, C39 C65, D001 D010, and D016 D021 plus E001 E003 make up 20 sites; C38, C66 C71, C73 C74, C76, D011 D015, and E004 E010 and E013 E018 total 16 sites; and E009, E011 E012, F003 F010, and G001 G023 comprise 15 sites. Campsites include picnic tables, fire rings and food-storage lockers; flush toilets, drinking water, and an amphitheater are provided, and the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center, a general store and a gas station are all within walking distance. The high meadows are a jumping-off point for hiking, climbing, backpacking and fishing: a 4.8-mile round-trip trail to Elizabeth Lake starts inside the campground and climbs to a glacier-carved basin beneath Unicorn Peak, and other nearby routes access Lyell Canyon (part of the John Muir Trail), Cathedral Lakes, Mono Pass, Glen Aulin and the Soda Springs/Parsons Lodge area. Tenaya Lake, a short drive away, is a popular spot for picnicking, swimming and canoeing. Because Tuolumne sits in the larger tapestry of Yosemite, visitors also use it as a base for auto touring, biking, boating, paddling, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, winter snowpark activities and visiting historic and cultural sites elsewhere in the park; Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point are reachable in a longer day trip (about 55 miles and roughly two hours to Yosemite Valley). Campsites in Yosemite are in high demand and reservable up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PT; reservations often fill in minutes, so be logged into recreation.gov before the release time (the recreation.gov call center cannot access additional sites). Cancellation policy details you should note: cancelling an individual or equestrian site incurs a $10 service fee (and the first night's fee if within 48 hours of arrival); group cancellations within 14 days also incur the service fee plus the first night's fee; single-night cancellations do not carry the $10 service fee; and no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus the first night's fee.
