What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (606 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“This was a great campsite next to the Merced River, close to the bathrooms and close to the trail over to Curry Village. We spent seven days there in the valley and it was a perfect central location.”

David T 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Great campground with an excellent location close to the village, complemented by a shuttle service. The park rangers are very helpful and friendly, and the bathrooms are clean. ”

Hugo G 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“A beautiful place to camp. Watch for the climbers at night. You can see their headlamps ”

About

Lower Pines sits on the valley floor at about 4,000 feet, among a mixed stand of black oak, ponderosa pine, incense-cedar and white fir with glimpses of Yosemite's granite walls and the Merced River nearby. The campground contains 74 sites in total 62 that accommodate both tents and RVs and 12 designated RV-only sites and is laid out with paved roads and individual parking spurs. Each site comes with a picnic table, a metal fire ring and a food-storage locker; the loop has flush toilets, drinking water and an amphitheater for ranger programs. The free Yosemite Valley shuttle stops at the campground entrance, and historic Curry Village with pay showers, a general store, restaurants, a bar and a tours desk is an easy walk away, so you have basic services without leaving the valley experience. Access to the park is via Highway 41 from Fresno, Highway 140 from Merced or Highway 120 from Manteca; follow signs to Yosemite Valley and the campgrounds. Because Lower Pines is one of the three reservation campgrounds in Yosemite Valley, spots move extremely quickly. Reservations open five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. Pacific (for example, on January 15 you can book arrival dates from May 15 to June 14), and you must be logged into recreation.gov to add sites to your cart the call center does not have extra availability beyond what's posted online. Know the cancellation rules before you book: cancellations made more than 48 hours before arrival incur a $10 transaction fee; within 48 hours you forfeit the first night plus a $10 fee (one-night reservations don't pay that extra $10 but are nonrefundable); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus the first night. From this base you can step directly onto Valley trailheads the paved, two-mile round-trip walk to Mirror Lake begins nearby, and the strenuous 14 16 mile Half Dome route (permit required) also starts in the valley or take part in rafting on the Merced when flows allow, guided bus tours, climbing, fishing, horseback riding and the park's interpretive programs. For more park details call (209) 372-0200 or visit the National Park Service site for Yosemite.
