Crane Flat Campground sits at about 6,200 feet on the park's western approach, roughly 17 miles (about 30 minutes) northwest of Yosemite Valley and 8 miles from the Big Oak Flat entrance. The site feels like high-Sierra woodland stands of sugar pine, red fir and lodgepole pine create a mix of sun and shade, with vanilla-scented Jeffrey pine and western juniper punctuating the sites and summer wildflowers coloring nearby meadows. There are 162 campsites in all: 73 that accommodate both RVs and tents, a single RV-only site, and 88 tent-only sites. Those sites are arranged across five loops Loop 100 (23 sites), Loop 200 (34 sites), Loop 300 (20 sites), Loop 400 (43 sites) and Loop 500 (38 sites) with paved roads and parking spurs, picnic tables, fire rings and a food-storage locker at each campsite. Flush toilets and drinking water are available on site, and a gas station and small general store are close by for last-minute supplies. Because Yosemite reservations go fast, expect Crane Flat to sell out quickly: be logged into recreation.gov before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time if you plan to snag a spot, and remember the recreation.gov call center has no access to extra sites beyond what's posted online. Cancellation fees are modest but strict more than 48 hours before arrival you pay a $10 transaction fee, within 48 hours you forfeit the first night plus $10, and no-shows incur a $20 service fee plus the first night's fee. Crane Flat is a practical hub for exploring a broad range of Yosemite experiences rather than a trailhead destination in itself. It sits between the Tuolumne and Merced groves of giant sequoias; both groves require roughly a 2.5 3.0 mile round-trip hike to reach the trees. From here you can reach Tioga Road and the White Wolf area for higher-elevation hikes, or take the 39-mile Tioga Road corridor through meadows, lakes and granite domes to Tuolumne Meadows. Yosemite Valley's waterfalls, bike paths and river rafting (when flows allow) are a half-hour drive away, and other park highlights such as Hetch Hetchy (about 23 miles), Glacier Point's sweeping vantage points and the historic Wawona/Pioneer Yosemite History Center are all within easy day-trip range. Activities throughout the park include hiking, biking, climbing, fishing, horseback riding, auto touring, paddling and wildlife viewing, and seasonal offerings such as snowplay in winter depend on road and weather conditions check recreation.gov for current opening dates and access requirements before you go.
