“Wonderful location with many beautiful hikes in the surrounding area. The campsite itself was scenic and clean. Would love to come back.”
“I can't really review my experience- I had to abandon my reservation because of heavy smoke from forest fires. I appreciate that the camp host actually called me to let me know it was really bad, which saved me a wasted trip. ”

Rock Creek Lake sits at about 9,600 feet on a low, tree-dotted hill above the lake, where scattered aspen and lodgepole pine frame clear blue water and open mountain views. The campground contains 26 sites in all 7 sites that can accommodate both RVs and tents and 19 tent-only sites with a number of tent-only walk-in spots positioned right on the lakeshore. Sites are spaced along the water so you'll have room between neighbors, and bear-proof food lockers are provided because black bears are active here; other wildlife includes mule deer, pine marten, pika, a variety of birds and the occasional mountain lion. Access is straightforward from the Mammoth Lakes area: head south on Highway 395 for about 13 miles, take the Tom's Place exit and drive roughly 10 miles up the canyon to the lake. Because the campground sits at high elevation, plan for rapid weather changes and thinner air; for questions about seasonal openings, fees and reservations, call the facility at (760) 935-4121. Recreation is concentrated on the water and the trails. Anglers fish Rock Creek and the lake for brook, brown, rainbow and stocked Alpers trout, and golden trout are a possibility higher in the backcountry; powercraft are limited to electric motors only, and boat rentals are available nearby if you don't bring a kayak or electric boat. The Tamarack Trail originates inside the campground and climbs toward several glacial alpine lakes and ponds, making the site a good base for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders heading into the eastern Sierra or into the John Muir Wilderness that runs along the range crest. Practical services groceries, showers, educational programs and on-site firewood for a fee are all close at hand, but specifics such as nightly rates, reservation windows and seasonal availability are handled by the managing office, so call (760) 935-4121 before you go.
