French Camp sits high in the eastern Sierra along Rock Creek at about 7,500 feet, a mix of aspens, pinyon, fragrant juniper and stands of ponderosa and Jeffrey pine framing a creekside ring of campsites. The campground's 83 sites are arranged in one large loop, with 62 sites suitable for both RVs and tents and 21 tent-only sites; each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring. There are no electrical or water hookups, though a few sites can handle medium to large RVs and trailers; most are sized for tents and small to medium rigs. Rock Creek runs alongside part of the loop, so several sites are creekside, and the clear cold water that begins in the John Muir Wilderness provides both a scenic soundtrack and a direct place to try your luck with trout. Outdoor opportunities are wide-ranging from the campsite: Rock Creek and nearby waters are known for brook, brown, rainbow and stocked Alpers trout, while trails in the surrounding mountains draw hikers and mountain bikers. The volcanic and metamorphic geology of the area makes rockhounding popular as well. Wildlife is plentiful mule deer, pine marten, pika, many bird species, and predators including black bear and mountain lion so follow local food storage and safety guidance. Firewood is sold on-site and the nearby community at Tom's Place (just off U.S. Highway 395 between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes) provides additional supplies and fee showers. The campground's seasonal open and close dates depend on weather and snowpack; check current conditions and any fee or reservation requirements with the Inyo National Forest or the campground's official information before you go.
