At roughly 8,900 feet, East Fork Campground sits among dense stands of pine and fir with pockets of aspen that flash gold in autumn, and it stretches right up to the cold, cascading waters of Rock Creek. The facility is laid out in four loops with a total of 71 sites; 46 of those are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents while the remaining 25 are tent-only, and sites range from tightly spaced spots to quieter pitches that back directly onto the creek. You'll find a mix of sun and shade through the day, bear-proof food lockers scattered through the loops, and firewood available for purchase on site. Seasonal opening and closing dates vary with snow and spring melt, so call the campground at (760) 935-4012 for current conditions, fees, and reservation details before you head up. The campground is a practical base for angling, hiking and mountain biking in the eastern Sierra. Rock Creek originating in the John Muir Wilderness and running about 22 miles through the canyon supports brook, brown, rainbow and stocked Alpers trout; golden trout are present higher in the backcountry. Several nearby trails climb into high-elevation country and loop around alpine lakes, and wildlife sightings commonly include mule deer, pine marten, pika, many bird species, and occasionally black bear or mountain lion, so store food properly. East Fork is convenient to the U.S. Highway 395 corridor between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes (roughly 30 miles north of Bishop); take the Tom's Place exit and continue about 6 miles on Rock Creek Road to reach Rock Creek Canyon. Local events to consider when planning a trip include Bishop's Mule Days over Memorial Day weekend and the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee in mid-July.
