John K ★ 3 · Aug 2025Bathrooms fantastically clean Site is great My only issue is this: After avalanche / flooding a few years ago, parking area mow has golf ball size rock/ gravel. Very bad traction and difficult to manuever trailers. Often got stuck while backing or pulling Probably wouldnt bring trailers anymore
Yessica C ★ 2 · Jun 2024Typically this is my absolute favorite site but the Avalanche did it dirty. Although the camp host should have prepared for camp season, that’s really what my review is about. Gravel was a large pile in the middle of the area where cars are parked. They removed 2 camp tables near the restaurant leaving only 2 near the field. For such a large camp site two tables aren’t suitable. The bear box closest to the tables did not have a key therefore we couldn’t use it. Had to trek to the one near the bathroom with no tables. They could have at least try to level the field in some way. It was soooo bumpy and full of holes with water (bugs were terrible), we ended up putting our tent along the parking area. I plan on going back of course because I’m super loyal to this site - it just wasn’t worth the price this go around. Bathrooms were clean. Trees were super bare and the creek path changed.
Yessica C ★ 5 · Oct 2022My goodness did we have a wonderful time! The camp host helped us scare a teenage bear away when it got wind of our pastries. Totally our fault for leaving our items out for and unattended (even if it was for 7 mins). Camp site is clean there are plenty of bear boxes and bathrooms were private and very, very clean. Hands down the best site that I have camped at.

Aspen Group Campground is a single group site on Rock Creek Road between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, California, sitting at about 8,100 feet in a stand of aspen trees that flash gold in autumn. Though described as primitive, the site does provide flush toilets and drinking water and offers ample open space and picnic areas that easily accommodate both RVs and tents; the single group campsite is set up to host up to 25 guests. The campsite sits immediately adjacent to clear, cold Rock Creek a 22-mile stream that begins in the John Muir Wilderness and looks west toward high peaks and steep canyon walls, so the sound of cascading water and easy creek access are part of the day-to-day experience. Wildlife is common here: mule deer, marmot, pine marten, many bird species, and occasional black bear and mountain lion tracks are part of the landscape, so food storage and standard backcountry precautions are necessary. Outdoor options radiate from the site: Rock Creek and nearby waterways are popular trout streams (brook, brown, rainbow and stocked Alpers trout are all possible, with golden trout found higher in the backcountry), while non-wilderness trails around Rock Creek Canyon lead to high-elevation lakes and offer routes ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs; several of those trails also attract mountain bikers. A commercial pack station is close for anyone wanting a horse outing into the backcountry, and basic services general stores, restaurants and pay showers are available at nearby resort communities. The group site can be reserved (it is intended for group use rather than first-come, first-served single campsites), so check the Inyo National Forest reservations page or office for current fees, seasonal openings and road conditions before you go.
