McGee Creek Campground sits at about 7,600 feet in the eastern Sierra between Bishop and Mammoth Lakes, set in open, sunny terrain of silvery sagebrush and a nearby aspen-lined meadow. The creek itself runs alongside the loop, with several sites placed right on the banks, and the campground offers clear views up to the high peaks of the John Muir Wilderness. Outdoor opportunities spill right out of camp: the McGee Creek Trailhead for hiking and horseback travel into McGee Canyon is roughly two miles away, rock climbers and geology enthusiasts frequent the local outcrops, and anglers will find good trout waters in McGee Creek and nearby Crowley Lake. Wildlife viewing, photography and seasonal events in the region Mule Days in Bishop over Memorial Day weekend and the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee in mid-July give additional reasons to time a visit. The campground contains 28 reservable sites, and each site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; every campsite includes a picnic shelter and the entire loop and spurs are paved for easy access. Practical amenities include bear-proof lockers for food storage and on-site firewood sales. Because McGee is on a paved two-mile spur off U.S. Highway 395 about 8 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and 37 miles north of Bishop it's relatively straightforward to reach, but the elevation and wilderness access mean visitors should check current road and seasonal conditions before traveling.
