Melanie H 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“I love that is is out of town but close too. It is clean and quiet!!! The camp host are awesome too. Not far from a few of my favorite trails. I stay here 3-4 times a year. ”

Ronnie G 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Debbie the camphost is very rude, condescending and does not possess the outdoor spirit. She needs an attitude check. We will never go back ”

About

Sherwin Creek Campground sits in the eastern Sierra Nevada just a short drive from the full-service town of Mammoth Lakes, roughly two miles from town along Old Mammoth Road and Sherwin Creek Road. The campground occupies a shady Jeffery pine stand at about 7,600 feet, with Sherwin Creek and bands of aspen threading the site wild roses and other spring flowers add color along the creekbanks. The layout is clear on arrival: 85 campsites in total organized into three main loops, all within walking distance of the creek, plus a separate, more secluded loop of tent-only, walk-to sites placed on both sides of Sherwin Creek. Of those 85 sites, 70 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents while 15 are tent-only; surfaces are native soil and most sites offer substantial shade. Wildlife is part of the experience here mule deer move through the pines, and the area supports species from pine marten and pika to black bears and mountain lions, while songbirds and trout populate the riparian zone. The campground is a hub for varied Sierra activities: an on-site motocross track and nearby off-road trails draw riders, while trailheads such as the Valentine Lake Trail provide hikers direct access toward the John Muir Wilderness. Anglers fish Sherwin Creek for rainbow trout close to camp, and day trips to destinations like Mono Basin, Devils Postpile National Monument, and Yosemite are commonly made from Mammoth. Mammoth Lakes itself provides services and seasonal events for example, the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee runs in mid-July so provisioning and entertainment are an easy drive away. Practical note for reservations: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation; for fees, seasonal opening dates and any other rules, check Recreation.gov before you arrive.
