Lake Mary Campground sits at about 8,900 feet on the northwest edge of Lake Mary, the largest and most developed of the Mammoth Lakes Basin. The site layout is four loops of closely spaced campsites that straddle the road at the lake's end, with 48 total sites each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs and several pitches within easy walking distance of the water. Some sites look out over the lake and the surrounding 9,000 10,000-foot peaks that rise into the John Muir Wilderness; others are tucked among lodgepole pines, so expect fairly compact spacing and limited privacy between neighbors. Because of its elevation, evenings are noticeably cool and weather can change quickly, so bring warm layers even in summer. The lake itself is a serious draw for anglers: Lake Mary receives the most trout stockings in the basin and is known for rainbow, brook and brown trout, though swimming and wading in the lake are not allowed. There are no formal trails beginning inside the campground, but a network of day hikes and backpacking routes radiates from the Mammoth Lakes Basin into the John Muir Wilderness for those looking to extend trips into higher country. Wildlife is common in the Eastern Sierra black bears, mule deer, pine marten and numerous birds so plan accordingly and be prepared to secure food and scented items. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; note that once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation. For access, the campground is a short drive west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, reached via US-395 and Highway 203 onto Lake Mary Road check Recreation.gov for current fees, opening dates and other visitor details before you go.
