“Amazing campsite. Close to water and as private as it gets in Coldwater Campground. Friendly camp hosts and clean bathrooms. Doesn't get much better! ”

Coldwater Campground sits at about 8,900 feet in a pine forest on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, just outside the town of Mammoth Lakes and a short drive up Lake Mary Road into the Lakes Basin. The site layout is compact: 74 campsites arranged in two loops, with sites fairly close together and often right alongside Coldwater and Mammoth Creeks. Large and small boulders dot the ground between campsites, and Lake Mary known for clear water and trout fishing is within easy reach. Each site is set up for both tents and RVs and comes with a picnic table, campfire ring and a bear-proof food-storage locker; pressurized water spigots and flush toilets are supplied throughout the campground. The campground is a practical jumping-off point for day hikes and backcountry routes: several major trailheads are nearby, and the 5-mile Duck Pass Trail departs from the hillside behind the campground, passes a string of small lakes and eventually crosses Duck Pass to meet the John Muir Trail and the broader John Muir Wilderness (a roughly 100-mile stretch along the Sierra crest with high peaks and glacially carved terrain). Anglers can target rainbow, brook and brown trout in Lake Mary, and the area also draws road cyclists and picnickers. Wildlife in the Eastern Sierras includes black bears, mule deer, mountain lions, pine marten, pika and many bird species, so follow posted food-storage rules and campground regulations. Practical note on reservations: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation; for fees, seasonal openings and current conditions check Recreation.gov before you go. For location, Coldwater is reached from U.S. Highway 395 via State Highway 203 through Mammoth Lakes (about a seven-mile drive on 203 to Lake Mary Road); it's roughly 320 miles north of Los Angeles and 180 miles south of Reno.
