Steve M ★ 3 · Jan 2020Good setting, near the creek. Campsite is pretty private, about half a mile or more up the road. Site is somewhat sloped, so finding level tent sites can be a challenge. Walk to water and restroom is 2-3 minutes. Bear boxes, trash receptacles, and picnic tables are all new.

Agnew Meadows Group Camp sits in the Reds Meadow Valley of the eastern Sierra, a short drive west of Mammoth Lakes off Red's Meadow Road near Minaret Vista. The group site lies at about 8,400 feet amid a lodgepole pine forest next to creeks and a small lake, and spring into early summer brings noticeable wildflower displays. There are 3 campsites in total; all 3 are configured to accept both RVs and tents, and individual group sites are built to accommodate gatherings of up to 10 or up to 20 people. The group area is adjacent to the main Agnew Meadows Campground and the Horse Camp, but note that the access road to the facility is narrow, single-lane and is open only in summer plan your travel and vehicle size accordingly and expect seasonal access limitations. This is a practical base for hiking, horseback riding and fishing: trailheads for the High Trail, Shadow Creek Trail, River Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail and entry points into the Ansel Adams Wilderness are all in the vicinity (hikers should be aware that shuttle service is required to reach some trailheads). Devils Postpile National Monument and the popular Rainbow Falls trailhead are nearby, and Reds Meadow Pack Station and Resort a short distance away provides a general store, café, horseback tours and pack support. Wildlife in the area includes black bear, mule deer, pine marten, pika and a variety of birds and fish, so store food properly and follow posted regulations. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; be aware of the campground policy that "once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation."
