“This is a great group campground, although remember that it only has vault toilets, no running nor potable water. You might want to bring some toilet paper in case they run out.”
“THE CAMPGROUND DOES NOT EXIST IT IS A ROAD END WITH FALLEN TREES. Horrible”
“The location was great, however, getting out of the campsite- around the curve near the bathroom was a bit challenging with our 32 ft trailer. Otherwise, we loved the location.”

Obsidian Flat Group Campground sits in a shady pine stand at about 7,800 feet on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, roughly 12 miles northwest of the Mammoth Lakes junction on U.S. 395 via Deadman Road. The site takes its name from a nearby obsidian lava flow and borders Deadman Creek, placing trout water and a gateway to high-country trails right at your doorstep. This is a true group site there is a single campsite on the property that accommodates both RVs and tents and is designed for one party at a time. The space will hold up to 50 people, up to five RVs (each no longer than 40 feet), or a total of 15 vehicles. Facilities are basic and functional: a picnic table, campfire ring, a vault toilet (no flush facilities), and a bear-proof food locker; plan on a fairly primitive experience and bring what you need for self-sufficiency. Recreation centers on the creek and the surrounding public lands: Deadman Creek is known for eastern Sierra trout fishing, and the Deadman Creek Trail provides access into the Ansel Adams Wilderness for day hikes or longer treks. Mountain bikers and off-road riders also use nearby routes, and several alpine lakes and Yosemite National Park are close enough for day trips. Wildlife is abundant black bears, mule deer, pine marten, pika and even mountain lions inhabit the area and the campground's bear locker is provided for food storage. Because this is a single, primitive group site at high elevation, check current conditions, seasonal openings, fees and reservation rules with the Inyo National Forest or Recreation.gov before you go.
