About

New Shady Rest Campground sits at about 7,800 feet beneath a mature canopy of Jeffery pine and is laid out in two large loops that sit alongside Old Shady Rest and Pine Glen Campgrounds. The facility is substantial 91 sites in total with 90 sites configured to handle both RVs and tents and one site reserved for tent use only, so it accommodates groups ranging from solo backpackers to families with trailers. Campsites come with picnic tables, campfire rings and access to restrooms with flush toilets; bear-proof lockers are provided for food storage and firewood is sold on-site. Showers are not available inside the campground, but nearby services supply them, and additional amenities such as grocery and retail options are only a short drive away. Wildlife is part of the setting here: mule deer, black bears, pine martens, mountain lions, pika and a variety of birds and fish inhabit the surrounding mountains. The campground is a practical base for exploring the eastern Sierra and the town of Mammoth Lakes the Forest Service visitor center sits across the street, and a paved walking and biking trail links the campground to two nearby campgrounds, a town park with a playing field and skate park, and to shops and restaurants in Mammoth Lakes. Outdoor options include hiking and mountain biking on numerous nearby trails, winter skiing at Mammoth's resorts, and excellent trout fishing in creeks and lakes a short drive from camp. For day trips, Yosemite National Park, Mono Basin and Devils Postpile National Monument are within easy reach, and local events such as the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee take place in mid-July. Access is via U.S. Highway 395 and State Route 203 into the Mammoth Lakes area; for current season dates, fees and site availability check Recreation.gov. Note the campground reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation.
